Day 1: Arrival at Sankri Base Camp
Dehradun is the starting point for the journey to Sankri, with vans available for boarding at ISBT by 7 AM. Sankri is 197 km away and requires an altitude increase of 1,950 meters to reach. It is a popular base for treks like Har ki Dun, Bali Pass, and Ruinsara Tal. The journey takes approximately 9–10 hours. The beautiful Kempty Falls and mountain streams are seen as a lovely drive that begins as it winds through Mussoorie’s hills. The road continues along the Yamuna River beyond Mussoorie, passing through shady pine forests and valleys.
The road may be bumpy, but the last 22 km into Govind National Park are particularly beautiful, offering views of coniferous forest, the Tonnes River, and an apple orchard. Around 5:00 PM is when we should arrive in Sankri.
Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab
After breakfast, the walk begins around nine in the morning. Packed lunches will be provided. You will receive gaiters and spikes for use on snow-covered trails during the peak of winter, along with a brief instruction on how to use them. The route heads off from Sankri and winds past Saud village before entering dense pine forests. You’ll travel along a path covered in maple leaf carpet and cross multiple bridges. This place becomes a snowy wonderland in the winter, and you might even get snowfall. After approximately an hour of progressively climbing, you will cross a wooden bridge and come to a stream on the trip. Dense stands of oak and maple replace the original tree line.
Day 3: From Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp
The walk gets higher today as you approach kedarkantha base camp. The journey begins at Juda ka Talab at 9 AM and climbs through thick oak woodlands. You will get your first view of the Kedarkantha top through the woods as you climb. Along the walk, you could come across patches of snow and growing rhododendrons in late winter or early spring. By April, vibrant flowers and fresh vegetation all over the place. You will arrive at the Kedarkantha Base Camp, which offers an amazing view of peaks like Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, and Kalanag.
Day 4: Kedarkantha Base Camp to Summit and Return to Sankri
To see the early morning, the walk to the top of Kedarkantha starts around three in the morning. Be ready for bitterly cold weather and strong winds. The walk begins with a gentle climb through the oak forest that opens up to a meadow over time. The peak is reached after a hard climb with an incline of 40 to 60 degrees.
The snow can be knee-deep in the winter, but by April it’s gone. You will arrive at the top in the morning after around 30 minutes of trekking, where you can enjoy the view of the mountains, including Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Swargarohini. A Trishul indicates the location of the shrine, which is devoted to Lord Shiva and Parvati, at the summit.
Day 5: Departure from Sankri
After having breakfast at Juda Ka Talab, you can leave for Sankri. With a brief break, enjoy the last views before leaving with priceless memories for Dehradun.
Note: You should plan to get to Dehradun between 8 and 9 PM. To account for any delays, reserve Volvos for 11 PM to midnight if you’re going to be in Delhi overnight.
